How to Care For Wool Socks
How do I wash and care for my wool socks so they last a long time, stay soft and in shape?
How often should wool socks be washed?
Actually as rarely as possible, especially if they contain a high percentage of wool. This is because the natural fibers of wool and especially the natural wax "lanolin" give your wool socks antibacterial and odor-resistant properties. Wool is, so to speak, self-cleaning. In fact, you will notice that when you wear them, they do not develop an unpleasant odo. Or, if they do, it only appears after frequent wear. A little fresh air is all it takes to get rid of the smell of worn wool socks. So instead of washing the socks, simply airing them out frequently is often enough to restore their freshness. It also helps preserve the socks, as frequent washing can wear down the wool fibers, putting a lot of strain on them or even damaging them. When washing, be sure to use the right detergent and set the water temperature appropriately.
Can wool socks be washed in the washing machine?
If airing them out is no longer enough, wool socks can be washed according to the instructions on the care label. For most wool socks, a machine wash cycle is safe.
Wool socks from steppenstrolch can be washed without any problems at 30 degrees on the delicate or wool cycle without shrinking or getting damaged. If your washing machine does not have these cycles, you can wash wool socks in the machine at 30°C and a maximum of 600 rpm. For best results, use a wool detergent that is free of bleach and artificial brighteners and is biodegradable. Additionally, avoid fabric softeners. Wool detergents are specifically designed for the care of natural fibers, as they contain no enzymes and have a neutral pH. This combination ensures that the wool socks are not damaged and preserves the natural wool grease.
How do I hand-wash wool socks?
An alternative to the wool cycle on your washing machine is to hand-wash your wool socks. To do this, use a biodegradable wool detergent that contains no artificial brighteners or enzymes. Fill a washbasin or sink with plenty of lukewarm water, and be careful not to rub or knead the socks while washing. Vigorous rubbing can damage the surface of the fibers, causing the wool to felt. Then gently squeeze out the water and let the wool socks air dry on a towel or clothes rack.
Should wool socks go in the dryer? No!
Wool socks should not be put in the dryer if they contain a high percentage of wool. This can cause them to shrink or become matted. It is best to dry wool socks that are still quite wet after washing on a clothes rack. For wool socks made of 100% wool, it is recommended to use a towel as a base and let the wool socks dry on top of it.
The Unique Properties of Wool
Wool fibers are truly amazing. As a renewable natural material, they offer unbeatable properties:
- Warm, because they insulate body heat very well.
- Odorless, because the natural oils in the wool prevent odors from lingering.
- Soft and cozy, because the finer and smoother the wool fiber, the softer it feels against the skin.
- Naturally biodegradable, as wool breaks down in the natural environment and can even be used as fertilizer.
- Regulates temperature, as wool fibers can both absorb and release heat.
